Our Services

We create the technical rules for natural gas, hydrogen and drinking water

The DVGW rules and regulations form the basis for all activities in the gas and water industry (CO2, H2, H2O, CH4). They provide a secure foundation for action and are practice-oriented. In 2024, there were around 800 test specifications, working and information sheets, as well as 700 standards that had been developed in collaboration with the German Institute for Standardisation (DIN). Some of these have already been translated into English, and others are in the process of being translated.

We ensure safety in Germany and Europe

The DVGW e.V. fulfils its statutory certification function through its subsidiary DVGW CERT GmbH. The portfolio includes the certification of products, specialised companies and management systems, among other things.

Allocations of code numbers for market communication gas

The 1998 Energy Industry Act, among other things, reorganised the German energy industry. Various market roles emerged that had to communicate with each other. Code allocation in the German gas market enables the unique identification and assignment of market participants and network interconnection points, virtual trading points (VTP) and balancing groups. The Energy Identification Code (EIC) is central to this. DVGW Service & Consult GmbH administers these codes.

verifHy - The Database on Hydrogen

Comprehensive information on the H2 readiness of gas grid components

verifHy is the central platform for quickly and conveniently checking the hydrogen suitability of your gas grids and thus the products, components and materials used. Reliable information on H2 readiness can be called up at the touch of a button. The extensive database includes both research and scientific findings and information from manufacturers, and is continuously expanded as needed. It is one of the most important technical tools for laying the foundations for the conversion of natural gas grids to climate-friendly hydrogen in an efficient and resource-saving manner.

Digital services for public drinking water supply

Digital transformation is currently taking place in all areas of public drinking water supply. Our expertise at TZW is in solving complex questions and problems of water supply companies. This is done either through direct technical support of companies or within the framework of practice-oriented research projects. In the process, all areas of drinking water supply - starting with resource protection, through water catchment and treatment, to distribution - are taken into account. Today, digitalisation plays a decisive role in all of these process steps. With our digital know-how, we can provide competent support here. This includes

  • Process analysis and optimisation,
  • the processing and evaluation of high-dimensional data using both deterministic and machine learning models
  • technical-scientific expertise regarding the construction and maintenance of data architectures and databases
  • as well as the development of solutions (web applications, software) for employees and customers.

We research innovative solutions for climate change and the energy transition

With its research, the DVGW develops forward-looking approaches and innovative solutions for an environmentally friendly energy supply and a safe and climate-resilient water supply. In addition to its existing practice-oriented research funding, the DVGW launched the Hydrogen Innovation Programme and the Water Future Programme in 2020 and 2021. The DVGW is supported by its nine research centres and international research networks.

In 2024, there were more than 60 ongoing research projects and around 250 completed projects since 2015. Some of them also have management summaries written in English.

The DBI Group offers specialist forums and workshops for the active transfer of research results, including topics such as hydrogen technologies and hydrogen infrastructure. Participants receive a practical overview of new technologies, experiences from developers/users and legal frameworks. For many years, there has also been a training programme for energy suppliers, civil engineering companies and rescue services. These training courses are the basis for successful safety management in the energy industry.
